HomeSafeID, one of Australia’s pet microchip registries, closed its animal registry service on February 7, 2025. This means that HomeSafeID is no longer maintaining or storing pet microchip records—potentially leaving thousands of pets untraceable if they go missing.

What Does This Mean for Pet Owners?
If your fur baby was registered with HomeSafeID, vets, shelters, and councils will no longer be able to access your contact details through its database. This could make reuniting with a lost pet much harder.
Many pets, especially those adopted from large organisations like RSPCA, may have been microchipped with HomeSafeID. If you’re unsure, now is the time to check and transfer your pet’s registration to a different database.
How to Check if Your Pet is Affected
✅ Find your pet’s microchip number – You can locate it on your pet’s adoption paperwork or have it scanned at your vet.
✅ Check the registry – Enter the number at Pet Address to see which database holds your pet’s details.
✅ If it’s HomeSafeID, take action now – You’ll need to transfer your pet’s details to another registry as soon as possible.
How to Protect Your Fur Baby
Book a Microchip Check – Visit us at Goodna Vet, and we’ll scan your pet’s microchip to ensure it’s working properly and linked to the correct details.
Update Your Details – Changed your phone number or moved house? Make sure your pet’s microchip registry reflects your current info.
Know Your Registry – With multiple databases in Australia, it’s crucial to know where your pet’s details are recorded and confirm their accuracy.
Collars & ID Tags Still Matter – A visible ID tag with your phone number is a quick and effective backup if your pet ever goes missing.
Where to Transfer Your Pet’s Microchip
If your pet was registered with HomeSafeID, you must re-register their microchip with a new provider. Here are some recommended registries:
Central Animal Records (car.com.au)
Australasian Animal Registry (aar.org.au)
PetSafe (petsafe.com.au)
Global Micro Animal Registry (globalmicro.com.au)
Don’t Know Your Pet’s Microchip Number? No worries—bring them in, and we’ll provide a complimentary microchip scan! Our team will also help check their registration status and guide you through updating their details

Even if your pet’s microchip is registered with a different provider, use this as a reminder to check and update your details. A microchip is only useful if the information linked to it is current!
At Goodna Veterinary Surgery, we’re here to help! If you’re unsure about your pet’s microchip status, book an appointment with us, and we’ll check it for you. Let’s keep our fur babies safe and ensure they always have a way back home.
