Flea & Tick Medications - How do they work?

There are dozens 😫 of options available when it comes to flea & tick prevention and it can be overwhelming trying to choose which one is best for you and your pet. So how do these treatments work and what is the difference between oral or topical? 🤔

Oral flea and tick medications are only available to dogs at this stage. 🐶 These work by entering your dogs system and becoming active in the tissue, bloodstream 💉 and skin. This means when a flea or tick bites they ingest this ingredient and ultimately die. Bravecto and Nexgard Spectra are two of the most well known oral medications and come in a chewable beef 🥩 flavoured tablet that is given monthly.

Topical flea and tick medications are available to both dogs and 🐱. Topical treatments work similarly to oral chews as they are absorbed into the skin and bloodstream. The difference here is that they are applied directly onto the skin 🖐🏼 between the shoulder blades instead of being ingested. Bravecto Spot on for dogs & cats and Bravecto Plus for Cats are two fantastic topical options with proven efficacy. 👍

Both forms of these medications are effective when used correctly. The main other difference is the length of treatment between medications. 🕰 Bravecto chews for dogs last for 3 months per chew, Nexgard Spectra chews for dogs last 1 month per chew, Bravecto spot on for dogs & cats lasts for 6 months and Bravecto Plus spot on for cats lasts for 2 months. 🙌
