Top 10 Things to Bring When Going Outdoors with Your Pet During Summer

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor adventures with your pet—whether it's a walk in the park, a trip to the beach, or a hike through nature. However, the heat and increased activity can put extra strain on your pet’s body, so it’s important to be well-prepared. Here’s a list of essential items to bring along when going outdoors with your pet this summer to ensure their safety, comfort, and enjoyment.

1. Fresh Water and a Portable Bowl

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially on hot summer days. Make sure to bring enough fresh water for both you and your pet. A portable water bowl is handy for quick and easy hydration during breaks. Collapsible bowls are lightweight and easy to carry, making them an excellent choice for outdoor outings.

2. Sunscreen for Pets

Pets, particularly those with light or short coats, can suffer from sunburn just like us. Apply pet-safe sunscreen to areas that are prone to sunburn, such as the nose, ears, and belly. There are sunscreens specifically designed for pets, so make sure you’re using one that’s safe for their skin.

3. Leash and Harness

Even if your pet is great off-leash, it's a good idea to bring a leash and harness to keep them safe, especially in unfamiliar or busy outdoor areas. A harness is often more comfortable and secure than a collar, particularly for dogs that tend to pull. Plus, it offers more control in case of an emergency.

4. Pet First Aid Kit

Accidents can happen while you're out and about, so it’s wise to bring a pet first aid kit with you. Include essentials like antiseptic wipes, gauze, bandages, and tweezers for removing splinters or ticks. A first aid kit can make all the difference if your pet gets a scrape or injury while outdoors.

5. Cooling Gear

On particularly hot days, cooling products can help keep your pet comfortable and prevent overheating. Cooling vests, mats, and bandanas are designed to absorb heat and help your pet stay cool during outdoor adventures. Don’t forget to monitor your pet for signs of heat exhaustion, such as excessive panting or drooling.

6. Waste Bags

Always clean up after your pet, no matter where you go. Bringing waste bags ensures you can dispose of your pet's waste responsibly. Keeping the environment clean also helps prevent unwanted pests and ensures a pleasant experience for everyone.

7. Toys and Treats

Bring a few of your pet’s favourite toys to keep them entertained and mentally stimulated while out and about. Toys like frisbees or balls are perfect for playing fetch, while chew toys can keep your pet busy during breaks. You can also bring some healthy treats to reward your pet for good behaviour or to keep them motivated during outdoor activities.

8. ID Tags and Microchip Information

Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with ID tags that have up-to-date contact information. If you’re going somewhere with a lot of people or other pets, there's always a chance your pet could become lost. Consider also having your pet microchipped for added peace of mind.

9. A Towel or Blanket

If you’re planning to visit the beach, a lake, or any other area with water, it’s always a good idea to bring a towel or blanket. This will allow your pet to dry off after a swim, or it can be used to create a comfortable resting spot during breaks.

10. Poisonous Plants Awareness

Certain plants can be toxic to pets. When going outdoors, be aware of any poisonous plants in the area, such as lilies, oleander, or rhododendron. Keep your pet on a leash and try to prevent them from chewing or eating any unknown plants.

Going outdoors with your pet in summer is a fantastic way to bond, but it’s important to be prepared. By packing these essential items, you can ensure your pet stays safe, hydrated, and comfortable while enjoying the great outdoors. Always be mindful of the heat, take regular breaks, and never leave your pet in a hot car.
