Understanding Meibomian Gland Tumours
Meibomian gland tumours refer to growths found in the meibomian glands of older dogs, presenting as small lumps along the eyelids' edges. While many of these tumours remain small, about 2-3mm, and do not require intervention, others may grow larger and necessitate removal, especially if they start to contact the eye surface, albeit typically without causing irritation.
Options for Treatment
At Goodna Vet, removal of meibomian gland tumours is conducted through a precise 'V' wedge excision technique, allowing us to excise the tumour with minimal impact on the eyelid's structure. The procedure usually involves removing a small portion of the eyelid, with care taken to preserve as much of the eyelid as possible for a natural look post-recovery.
For closing the surgical site, we use extremely fine sutures, ensuring the eyelid margins are neatly realigned. When performed with expertise, it's often hard to notice any indication of surgery or the presence of a prior tumour.
Cost of Treatment
Unlike other clinics that may refer such cases to specialists at higher costs, Goodna Vet offers these surgeries in-house with efficiency and affordability. Typically, our procedures start from $1,400.
We do offer payment plans through credit providers. Please see our payment plans section for more information.
Post-Operative Care
After surgery, we provide a protective cone collar to prevent your pet from rubbing the treated area, along with eye ointment to reduce post-surgical inflammation. Suture removal occurs two weeks after the procedure, a follow-up visit offered at no additional charge.
At Goodna Vet, we're committed to providing your pet with the highest standard of care for meibomian gland tumours, ensuring a smooth surgery and recovery process. Trust our team to help maintain your pet's comfort and health with our experienced surgical approach.
